Group Information
Ladies Afloat thrives due to the enthusiasm and commitment of its members. We meet at the Club between 09.00 and 09:30 on Thursdays from April to October, depending on the activity and aim to get out on boats soon after. The sailing experience of the members varies from complete novice to instructor, but we all share a common enthusiasm for being on the water.
There is an interesting and varied calendar with overnight trips, full-days and half-days planned. On a routine Thursday there are opportunities to:
- Dinghy sail
- Cruise in a variety of yachts and keelboats
- Gain experience in power and support boats.
All of our sailing is both tide and weather dependent so there will be the inevitable last minute change of plans. We have picnics, BBQs and most of our meetings have lovely homemade cakes.
We do not provide formal training courses but there is the opportunity to learn from the wide diversity and depth of skills of our members. We run Kick Start Sessions in April to review some of the basics. The Club runs RYA training courses and we actively encourage members to participate in those in order to accelerate their learning. Safety is paramount in all our activities and to that end we have an ‘Officer of the Day’ briefing before we take to the water.
We encourage all members to play their part in the running of Ladies Afloat and if you would like to become involved in event organizing, be it sailing, treasure hunts, catering, please let us know. We get to know each other better and make new friends as we volunteer.
